THE OLD

The old pictures used in this site came from many different sources.

The pictures in their original forms ranging from good quality old photos down to newspaper clippings.

Many of the old photographs I had borrowed originate from the same photograph. These copies themselves being at least 50 years old tend to have been cut down for framing or to remove tatty edges. It can be quite amusing to look at three separate "original" photographs to then discover that there was obviously a flourishing trade in old photos many years ago.

The quality of many of the pictures when I got hold of them was very poor. Many being straight photographic copies of even older originals. While others, when examined carefully, are photographs taken directly from printed media i.e. newspapers.

To reproduce these pictures from their original forms would have been nigh on impossible, so as with many things these days the power of the computer was utilised to perform the following steps.

1. The original photographs were colour scanned at 300dpi this providing a good quality master image. The only downside being the large file size it produces (2 to 3 Mb).

2.The images were then cropped to remove any borders or corner album mounts.

3. The images were then colour equalised before being converted to greyscale. This has the effect of producing a "black and white" photograph as opposed to the original sepia tones.

4. The images were now either fine tuned for contrast/brightness by hand or processed using "EXTENSIS INTELLIGANCE" to provide the best results possible.

5.Badly damaged images would then have any scratchs, tears etc. removed by hand.

All imaging work is carried out using the PHOTOPAINT element of COREL DRAW this is, in my view, by far the best graphics suite on the market.

THE NEW

All the comparison pictures featured on this site were taken using a Kodak DC-280 digital camera to produce 120 dpi images.

These images were then cropped and resized to match the old photograph.

Kodak's range of digital cameras are neither the most beautiful designs nor overflowing with features, but as with their traditional cameras over many years, they do deliver remarkably good results without hitting you too hard in the pocket.
