My Grandad was John Murry, my dad is Peter Murry who was the head chef at the 3 nuns during the 60's - 70's and my mum, Patricia Murry was the cocktail bartender before marrying my dad. I too have some fond memories of the three nuns (although I was very young) and when the family get together, nostalgia takes over and conversation always gravitates to the three nuns. I also have many photo's of the family at the three nuns, working, relaxing. Some of the staff, Jock the wine waiter, Emile, one of Dads chefs. From what I understand it was quite a famous restaurant? It'd be great to hear about experiences/tales etc.
Peter is now 85, but still talks fondly of the time he spent there.

Carol, the taxi driver/owner was Benny Haigh. I lived in the Horseshoe yard and worked there at weekends whilst a catering student in Huddersfield. One Sunday morning Benny came to ask me to work because some of the staff wo lived in Huddersfield were snowed in.I was still in bed after working there late the night before.
My dad who had told me off for working so late had to come and rouse me. I told him to tell Benny that I wasn't coming. He was a right two faced so and so and my Dad. So off he went and made excuses as to why I wasn't coming. I then got up and went to work. I wouldn't have missed it it. As you say they were great times.

When I was young (in the 60's) my mum used to be chief cashier at the Three Nuns Inn and she had loads of autographs of famous people that stopped on their travels for refreshments, Ena Sharples, Concepta Hewitt and Martha Longhirst of Coronation Street and Jimmy Saville.
The staff had a Childrens Xmas party their every year and we used to have Punch and Judy show it was really good, their were a lot of children too, the Man that ran the Three Nuns at the time was called Mr John Murray and there was a permanent taxi driver (with a black cab) he used to live in Robertown his wife used to run the wool shop their, he used to drop my mum off after work as he went home as we lived on the A62 just below the White Gate Inn, fantastic days then.

I have to admit in my youth I spent rather a lot of time and money in the "Nuns",I probably first went there about the time of it's transformation from a rather stuffy restaurant image to a big family pub. About this time it had some publicity in one of the national papers with a ghost story, apparently during the refit a carved oak panel featuring a rather satanic looking rams head was discovered hidden in the cellar. It was decided it would make an ideal feature for another pub the owners operated elsewhere, however after the panel was removed to its new home strange happenings began noises were heard in the night, lights inexplicably turned on and off, the building proved impossible to heat and the cellar sprang leeks and was flooded with beer! After a few months of these events the rams head panel was returned and fixed to the wall above the pool table the mysterious events then ceased. Maybe it was just a bit of good marketing but the rams head panel isn't anywhere visible now after the pubs last refit but I would like to think maybe it's still on the premises where it belongs. Another urban myth that might or might not be true is that the original ancient inn stood in the car park and that its cellars still remain and can be accessed by a hidden passageway from the present pub.
