THE NOT SO OLD CORN MILL Old Mill - We visited the Old Mill on Sunday 25.5.03. It was quite a remarkable transformation inside from what it used to be like to now. The only thing I will say is that it is extremely dark inside and takes a while to adjust to. The menu looks nice (fish specials) and we ate from the snack menu which was nice. It seems to be aiming a little up market and certainly isn't the place for a laugh with your mates. The old style music was really annoying and I think I'd go mad if I had to work there all the time! The management left something to be desired! The staff were friendly and pleasant but one girl made a mistake and the manager dressed her down in front of other staff and customers. This gave a decidedly bad impression and left us thinking they were playing at "posh" rather than being up market. Overall a nice experience but not really my thing although I'm sure a wedding function, romantic meal for two or conference would be well suited there! Nothing special -5/10. Marie Chester 27/05/03 |

HOPTON MILLS CRICKET CLUB The club would like to put together a girls' under-16 cricket team. They are currently short of at least 5 members to be able to do this. If there are any girls that are interested they can go along to the Wood Bottom ground on a Tuesday or Thursday evening from 6-7pm. Parents are welcome to come along to watch practice or can phone Richard Carroll on 460008 for more details.

PERMIT PALAVA Is anyone as daft as me? I received my council tax bill and within the envelope was an A-Z of Kirklee's services. This is nothing unusual as I receive one every year. I placed the booklet in a safe place in case I need it. Wondering why I hadn't yet got a permit for the tip I asked a few neighbours. How silly did I feel when I was told it was in the centre of the A-Z booklet? Has everyone else found theirs? I can't be the only one who missed it... Marie Chester 08/05/03

Police called to waste protest! It was naive of the Kirklees Planning committee councilors when surrounded by all those very naughty Mirfield residents to try and summon the police on a mobile phone. Anyone at the protest could have told them that the standard procedure in Mirfield is to phone the police wait two hours without any response, then receive a phone call asking if you still want them to attend! Excuse for a Pint! If you like old Mirfield pictures, that could be just the excuse you are looking for to pop into the newly refurbished Ship Inn on Steanard Lane. The pub now features a nice selection of old Mirfield pictures including one corner devoted to the L.S.D. motor company, who at one time produced a rather strange looking 3 wheeled vehicle in Mirfield. The pub is now owned by the Green King brewery from Bury St Edmunds trading under their Hungry Horse brand. Unlike a number recent Mirfield pub refits, The Ship now stands out as something a bit special being a nice mix of modern and traditional. The prices and quality of the menu are excellent and I would definitely recommend trying a pint of their Green King Abbot Ale, it definitely gives those “Yorkshire Beers” a run for their money! People power might yet prevail! Kirklees “fat cats” the planning committee councillors swept in to Mirfield this morning by executive coach to cast a cursory glance over the proposed waste transfer site that seems, for whatever reason, to have already been rubber stamped by them. But unfortunately their little trip out at the tax payers expense didn’t quite go to plan when they were greeted by 200 plus angry Mirfield residents. Initially all smiles and sarcastic comments, the councillors quickly toured the site and tried to beat a hasty retreat. Unfortunately for the councillors the protesters had other ideas and the coach was quickly surrounded. Much banging on windows and verbal abuse quickly took the smiles off the fat cats faces. Fortunately, just in the nick of time, local councillor Martin Bolt came to their rescue and managed to calm things. The fat cats then sped away back up Hopton Lane (Shame they didn’t meet a wagon coming the other way!) probably for gin and tonics all round at the tax payers expense followed by a bit of mutual back slapping!
